What is Bhasma Aarti?
Bhasma Aarti is the most sacred morning ritual at Mahakaleshwar Temple (Mahakal Mandir) in Ujjain — one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and the only south-facing (Dakshinamurti) Jyotirlinga in India. During this pre-dawn ceremony, the Jyotirlinga is bathed and anointed with bhasma — holy ash — before the aarti is performed.
Unlike regular darshan, attending Bhasma Aarti inside the garbhagriha (inner sanctum) requires an advance online booking pass from the temple trust. The ritual draws devotees from across India and the world, making it one of the most sought-after spiritual experiences in Ujjain.
